…This brings us to New Year’s resolutions: when we state them as absolutes, they set us up to fail and to think of ourselves as failures. “I am never going to smoke another cigarette.” “I am going to lose forty pounds this year, and keep the weight off.” “By next year, I will write that novel I’ve been putting off.” I will never drink or drug again.” What happens when we don’t accomplish these things? We are liable to become convinced that we cannot, and simply give up — at least until next time, when we again set ourselves up to fail.
