I have to tell you that I’m totally disgusted with the way the administration has handled the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These people are no more competent than the idiots who preceded them (think Katrina). Now the inability of the current crowd to get their act together and LEAD has probably destroyed what’s left of the regional culture on the Gulf Coast.
Why was there no plan in place to deal with something like this immediately? A blowout on land would be sealed off in whatever way necessary — often using explosives to close the well. Everyone knows how to do that. Why didn’t we already have things in place to do it underwater, in an environment that makes blowouts and spills even more likely than on land?
Why isn’t BP, the single entity with the most to lose if the spill continues, doing more? It’s like having a leaky high-pressure hose: you don’t bother trying to stop the leak with duct tape, you shut off the supply of whatever is in the hose. BP had a 23,000-foot hose, and it broke. Why hasn’t it been shut off? Do they really think we won’t notice that they can’t get the job done? Do they really think their buddies in the Interior Department can protect them? Do they know something we don’t?
Why hasn’t the USG stepped in? The Navy could handle the problem with one submarine and a couple of torpedoes. All they’d need is for the BP robots (or someone) to put a sonar homing device on the wellhead. The Russians have done it four times. To be sure it would work, they used nukes.
Why hasn’t this thing been fixed? What the fuck is going on here?
