Liberals Aren’t Un-American. Conservatives Aren’t Ignorant.

Jonathan Haidt is hardly a road-rage kind of guy, but he does get irritated by self-righteous bumper stickers. The soft-spoken psychologist is acutely annoyed by certain smug slogans that adorn the cars of fellow liberals: “Support our troops—bring them home” and “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

“No conservative reads those bumper stickers and thinks, ‘Hmm . . . so liberals are patriotic!’” he says, in a sarcastic tone of voice that jarringly contrasts with his usual subdued sincerity. “We liberals are universalists and humanists; it’s not part of our morality to highly value nations. So to claim dissent is patriotic—or that we’re supporting the troops, when in fact we’re opposing the war—is disingenuous.

“It just pisses people off.”

The University of Virginia scholar views such slogans as clumsy attempts to insist we all share the same values. In his view, these catch phrases are not only insincere, they’re also fundamentally wrong. Liberals and conservatives, he insists, inhabit different moral universes….

Liberals Aren’t Un-American. Conservatives Aren’t Ignorant.

I’ve been saying that for a long time; rarely shall the twain meet. There are simply two basic sorts of human, with different world views. I used to think that was over-simplification, but as I’ve gotten older it’s become absolutely clear.

The White House – Blog Post – Reality Check: Trying to Turn a Point of Pride into a Moment of Shame

The White House – Blog Post – Reality Check: Trying to Turn a Point of Pride into a Moment of Shame

Last night Fox News continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration’s efforts to win the Olympics for the United States. In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News’ Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings…

Whoooeeee! Is Barack finally taking off the gloves? The piece closes with the lines

For even more Fox lies [emphasis mine], check out the latest “Truth-O-Meter” feature from Politifact that debunks a false claim about a White House staffer that continues to be repeated by Glenn Beck and others on the network.

(Naturally, you won’t see much about this in the media….)

U.S. road czar sends message against texting

U.S. road czar sends message against texting – Today’s Top Stories – MiamiHerald.com

Opening a two-day meeting to find ways to reduce drivers’ use of mobile devices, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported that nearly 6,000 people were killed and a half-million were injured last year in vehicle crashes connected to driver distraction. That includes drivers talking on cellphones and texting.

“Distracted driving is an epidemic and it seems to be getting worse every year,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

LaHood said he would offer recommendations on Thursday that could lead to new restrictions behind the wheel.

And damned-well time!  Michele and I took a 600-mile trip last weekend.  It is amazing how most of the unskillful drivers had a cell phone to their head.  Some were visibly texting (those were the ones who were holding the phone up, where they at least had a peripheral view of the road), and no telling how many were doing so with the phone held down where we couldn’t see it.  In contrast, I saw very few drivers who appeared to be intoxicated, and after all those years as a cop I know the signs.  Drunks drive differently than folks who are distracted.

Top Things you Think You Know about Iran that are not True

Informed Comment: Top Things you Think You Know about Iran that are not True

Thursday is a fateful day for the world, as the US, other members of the United Nations Security Council, and Germany meet in Geneva with Iran in a bid to resolve outstanding issues. Although Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had earlier attempted to put the nuclear issue off the bargaining table, this rhetorical flourish was a mere opening gambit and nuclear issues will certainly dominate the talks. As Henry Kissinger pointed out, these talks are just beginning and there are highly unlikely to be any breakthroughs for a very long time. Diplomacy is a marathon, not a sprint.

But on this occasion, I thought I’d take the opportunity to list some things that people tend to think they know about Iran, but for which the evidence is shaky.

Belief: Iran is aggressive and has threatened to attack Israel, its neighbors or the US…
