Leading Psychiatrist Failed to Report Drug Income

The psychiatrist, Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff of Emory University, is the most prominent example to date in a series of disclosures that is shaking the world of academic medicine and seems likely to force broad changes in the relationships between doctors and drug makers.

A Few Remarks After The VP Debate

Well, it’s over.  The debate, that is.  Undecided voters polled by the networks indicated 95:5 that they thought Biden did a better job than Palin.  A substantial number said they were now favoring the Democratic ticket.  In fairness, a much smaller — but still significant — number said they were inclined toward the Republicans.

The consensus seemed to mirror what I thought myself: Continue reading

Grim Jobs Report

The markets lifted this morning, despite a report showing that employers shed 159,000 jobs in September, the most in more than five years and outpacing analysts expectations of 100,000 job losses. The unemployment rate stayed steady at 6.1 percent, according to Labor Department data released today.

The report adds to the already grim picture painted in recent weeks by economic data showing that home prices continue to fall and consumer spending has stalled. The Dow fell 300 points, or 3 percent, yesterday after Labor Department figures showed that new applications for jobless benefits rose to a seven-year high, while factory orders in August dropped more than expected.

‘Coca-Cola douches’ scoop Ig Nobel prize

Tests of whether sodas such as Coke and Pepsi could be used as spermicides were among the many offbeat ideas celebrated at the 2008 Ig Nobel awards on Thursday. Lap dancers’ tips and armadillos’ uncanny ability to wreak havoc at archaeological sites were also the subjects of prize-winning studies.

FDA Will Rewrite Rules For Marketing for Children

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration will rewrite decades-old federal regulations governing how over-the-counter cold and cough medicines are marketed to children amid concerns over whether the products are safe and effective.

As part of that effort the agency held a daylong hearing Thursday to solicit views about how the rules should be changed. While the effort is expected to take years, the end result could be a tougher regulatory environment for many over-the-counter cold and cough products — such as requiring drug makers to seek approval for their products in a manner similar to that for prescription drugs.

It’s about time.  We know now that children’s brains develop in such a way as to make them susceptible to the effects of some drugs in ways completely different from adults.  Simply reducing the adult dosage is not good enough.

MY HOLIDAY WITH JOHN McCAIN — Retraction

Dear Readers,

After putting some research into the provenance of this article, I find too many questions about its origin, and have been unable to uncover anything that supports its authenticity.  Neither have Snopes.com, who list it as “Undetermined.”  That is not good enough for someone who, while not my kind of guy, has served this country faithfully for many years.

Although I remain a staunch supporter of Senators Obama and Biden and find the possibility of Senator McCain and Governor Palin getting into the White House to be absolutely chilling, I must, nonetheless, apologize to the senator, his supporters and to you for having posted it without checking more carefully.  This is precisely the kind of character assassination we have come to expect from the “other side,” and I regret having been an unwitting party to it.
