Save the oceans, or else paradise is lost

For the first Earth Day, cartoonist Walt Kelly drew a poster featuring his most well-known character. It showed Pogo, a possum who lived in the Okefenokee Swamp, standing in front of a trash-filled forested wetland. Above him in large block letters was what was to become a decidedly memorable phrase: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

Three decades later, Mr. Kelly’s words still resonate, especially here in Florida. The millions of Floridians who love to swim, surf, fish, kayak, scuba dive or just soak up the sun along our coasts need to be on the alert: We’re ruining paradise.
